Good leadership for the rise of Venice.

Doge Pietro Ziani.
His strategy was to expand trade through conquest. He helped to ensure that Venice gain control of important territories in the Mediterranean Sea. These included Crete and Corfu. The territories were important because it enables the Venetian Great Galleys to replenish their supplies without incurring more costs before sailing to the destination. These stops also allowed large crew of oarsmen to rest.

Doge Enrico Dandolo.
In the 12th centuries, Doge Enrico Dandolo took charged of the Fourth Crusades under the command of the Pope, who was the head of the Western Christian World then. The Crusaders were supposed to attack Jerusulum but was convinced by Doge Enrico Dandolo to attack Venice's rival, Constantinople, which was the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The decision by Doge Enrico Dandolo to attack Constantinople was a turning point in Venice's history as it weakened Constantinople and helped Venice to rise further because Venice now control some of the Byzantine territories that was important for trade.
